How to use a Seagate 500GB hard drive?

I have bought a Seagate 500GB external hard drive in order to free up my Acer laptop and get it to run faster. Running on Windows XP how do I go about (In detail please) moving stuff across and exactly what do I move across to get the required results?

When you plug in the USB from your new hard drive to your laptop it should recognize it. You will then have to format the new hard drive. Once formatted, open two windows of windows explorer, one for your "C" drive and one for your new drive. You will then be able to drag & drop the folders and files to you new drive.
