If it is a DC07, this is a common problem particularly when the bin has been overfilled. The smaller top cyclones block with fluff and the motor is starved of air. It needs the air to stay cool. I have a dyson shop on ebay 'South West Dyson Recovery' where I have ready cleaned cyclones for sale if that helps.

Try the following things:
1: Check for obstructions everywhere, as instructed in your manual. Remove / cut away excess hair that might have built up.
2: Clean the washable filter, as per instructions. You might consider buying a new filter from Dyson.
3: Change the non-washable lifetime filter, you might have clogged it after all.
