how can i fix my sony rdr hxd860?

hi my dvd recorder will not record and c 13 is shown on the display at the same time the message disc is dirty appears on the tv screen. i am trying to record to the hard drive.the machine is a sony dvd recorder model rdr hxd860

Pull the power cable, leave for a few seconds, then plug back in. Then power up the HXD using the remote. This should clear it.

Why Sony couldn't automatically recover the fault beats me. If I designed that type of error handling into my systems, I'd be fired.
