I took another look at the cord release button and found that if you push it down and look between it and the motor housing you will find 4 plastic tabs that lock in the cord release hinges. I used a small flat head screw driver and a little finesse to get it off. Once removed you'll find 2 more screws in the motor housing.

I have the same problem - it is obvious the cover to the cord release pops off in some fashion. I have not figured it out yet but will keep trying - hope I don't break something.
