my door bell doesn't work?

how do I figure out what is broke/needs to be replaced?
The front door bell doesn't ring. It it the button or the box in the hallway?

Firstly, is it battery operated or mains/transformer?
Have you replaced the battery? Have you checked the appropriate fuse? Have you checked all the connections are good?
If that gives you no joy, then remove the front of the doorbell press button and join the 2 wires that attach to it. (Don't worry, it's less than 12 volts so there is no danger of electrocution!)
If the bell rings when you join the wires then it is the press button itself that is faulty.
If that doesn't work then it's the box in the hallway that's faulty and needs replacement.
Hope this helps.
