flushing problems caused by failing washers?

We have had two rubber washers fail in about 4 years - one at the push button end and most recently at the float cut off valve end. Can anyone suggest why these washers are failing so frequently? My previous bathroom toilet did not show these faults as frequently.

Chlorine in the water eventually destroys the rubber. No name replacements often use more inferior rubber than the original parts. This compounds the poblem
