how can i tell is a viscous fan is broken on an 02 transit

take it this is the 2.4 duratorq,hold the fan blades and feel for play in the coupling,for removal the fan belt will have to come off,its a long belt with lots of pulleys so draw a diagram of the route,think there are three 15mm bolts holding fan on
