Fisher & Paykel washing machine starts then stops and beeps?

Hi there,

My washing machine is Fisher & Paykel GW601-K. The problem it is having is that when it starts, the water bursts from inlet valve into the tub for less than a second and stops, then bursts and stops again. After repeating that for 5 - 8 times, the whole machine eventually stops and starts beeping.

The error code showing on the top row LED is:
00010000
Which means the 4th LED from the left is on while the machine is beeping.

According to my limited knowledge, the error code is decimal value 16 (converting binary 00010000 to decimal). However I don't have any service manual from which I can lookup what the error code means.

Can someone help me with that please?

Thanks!

fault code 130 - poor / tired Rps - washing machine
at scrap metal dealer are now worth less than $5
the 501 / 601 /701 machines have a very reliable
Rps - better than any of the new stuff
get 2 x good looking Rps and try them on your own
machine - you must clean the 5 pin rps socket with crc etc - as a lot of the time its socket corrosion problem ( and let it dry )

Posted too soon ! Before the machine packed up there was a low-grade whine on spin. This is now much louder. I took the rotor off again and there was some water in there. Likely what's happened is the bearings and seal are failing, allowing water into motor with corrosion of the rotor position sensor. Repair shop says if I take them the outer bowl assembly its $NZ45 for the bearings and seal plus a half hour labour.

Hi, had similar problem with our ageing GW601. Initial fault code was 16 then it became 134 after entering Diagnostic mode. Have just replaced the rotor position sensor ($NZ85) - instructions here http://www.angelsnz.net/ZL3SV/misc/F&P%20Service%20manual%20517735.pdf. The old RPS had corrosion+ around the ICs. Now working great again - thanks.

Hi there,

I really appreciate your assistance with fixing my washing machine. I went to Fisher & Paykel spare parts yesterday and bought the Rotor Position Sensor for NZD$69.00, and I installed it on my washing machine, then the machine started working again!

Regards.

Like I said before, lay machine down on it's front panel to access the motor from below. If your machine has a bottom tray just remove it by levering it off with a screwdriver. Very simple to do. If it is old & rusty as most of them are just throw it away & don't put it back on. It serves no useful purpose. This model machine is at least 18 years old now & may not be worth the time & money to fix. Depends on the overall condition & history.

Hi there,

I have looked at my washing machine, it cannot be opened from the back or sides. There is only one small rectangle hole covered by a plastic panel at the bottom right corner of the front. I opened it up and looked inside, I could only see the big motor at the bottom of the tub and a small motor that I believe belongs to the water pump.

It is a Smartdrive model. Do you think I should open it up from the bottom? The bottom seems to be open-able, but there would be quite a bit of hassle to do it I reckon.

Also do you know where can I find the service manual of my washing machine?

Thanks!

Thanks you very much, I will try it a try.

Yes 130 is a RPS fault usually of a temorary or intermittent nature. 131 is a RPS complete fail fault. RPS is mounted on top of stator winding. Lay machine down on it's front panel. Remove rotor. Then loosen 4 hex bolts holding stator & pull it down far enough to push RPS up & out (after removing wiring plug) Check for corrosion on RPS & wiring connector) Replace RPS if in doubt.

Thanks for directing me to finding the true error code. It is 10000010 which is 130.

Is it something to do with rotor position sensor fault? If so how to check and fix it?

Regards!

You are correct in converting to binary code 16. However, there is no fault code 16 listed for the GW601 model. Some of the earlier models do not show the true error code when it beeps, the true error code is retained in the memory & needs to be accessed. Do the following: Power on at wall but off at panel. Then press & hold temperature down button & power on button together for about 5 seconds until panel beeps & lights change. Press advance button until high water level is on. Then press spin speed button up until both slow & hold lights are on. At this point read the error code on the top row as before. To exit back to normal wash mode press power off at panel. Post true error code back here.
