Exterior door swelling in wet weather?

I have a wooden exterior door which has been coated with woodstain which is supposedly weather proof however in wet weather the door swells so much that it is almost impossible to open and close it. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

has the top and especially the bottom of the door been treated this is where the end grain of the wood is open to the atmosphere and will soak up any moisture
