wireing a ceiling fan?

the lead cable out of the ceiling has red (live) blue (Neutral) and the earth. also a fourth wire, pale yellow. i taped up the pale yellow lead and connected the fan, which works with the pull cord, but seem to have bypassed the switch on the wall... what have i done wrong?

the yellow wire is norm the switched feed,check it with a test meter,i.e. remove the tape,get some one to turn the switch on as you put leads of test meter between the yellow and neutral,if all ok,then connect the fan to yellow and neutral feed put bullet connector on the red lead
