Excellent.

I've just had exactly the same problem with my Thomson DTI 1000, and replacing the 47uF capacitor (17p from Maplins) did the trick. Symptoms were: flashing white bands on vision accompanied by ticking noise on sound. It was intermittent then became permanent. Thanks to you all for saving me some money and my Freeview box from being binned.

The box has been working fine for several weeks after replacing C817, so I reckon that was the cause of the fault.

My Thomson model is the DTI 1000. I replaced capacitor C502 (10uF 400v) but that didn't help. So I checked C817, the smaller capacitor beside it (47uF 50v), and it seemed to have developed some resistance. I didn't have an exact match but I replaced it with a 22uF 50v capacitor and that seems to have done the trick. (The fault was intermittent so I will have to watch it for a few days to be sure. If the fault returns I will post here again.) If you try this repair be aware that the circuitry carries raw mains so be careful.

Must be the season for ticking Thomson boxes! Mine just started doing the same. I think the PSU is not starting. Whenever I mess about with it it springs to life, but I can't see anything obvious. The main 400v 10uF capacitor measures at 5uF so perhaps it is the cause. Capactitors are only a couple of bob but the postage is the killer - would cover the deposit on a new (and probably better) box. If I get around to changing the capacitor I will post the result here.

Mine's doing the same thing. Just won't switch on, but making a ticking noise. It happened once before. I spoke to Thompson, who said that the box was beyond repair and that I would need to get a new one. Just as I was looking at options for replacing it, it came back on.

I hope this happens again...and for you. If you come up with a magic solution, do let me know.

Good luck.
