agree with plumbo, you might be better off changing the whole lot for plastic.
Start at the top and take it down slowly and it is not a easy job due to the weight.

Be careful with cast iron stacks, they are very heavy and have killed people when falling on them. The screws and bobbins tend to rot and offer no support when disturbed. Be very careful!
