thanks brian but the question was what size is commonly used for flues ? could you tell me is it possible to use a SDS rotary/hammer drill ? how do i know if a drill has a clutch ?

yes most plumbers/building merchants will have them but you also need heavy duty drill with a clutch (do not under any circumstances use a standard drill) if you only want it for one hole either hire or just as easy stitch drill also depends what bricks are where i live they are engineering bricks a core bit won't touch them
