my bolier has a red light next to the pressure gauge which shows very little pressure and obviously the heating will not come on.
any advice much appreciated

Probable leak on the central heating...check your valves as a small drip will be enough over time for pressure to drop.
You will need to use the filler pipe to fill ur system back to the required water pressure of about 1 Bar.

Hope it helps ..(Im not a plumber...But it has worked on mine)
