How do I fix a dripping toilet valve?

My toilet fill valve drips water into the tank and the tank doesn't fill. There isn't any water running through the tube. It just drips from the valve. Do I need to replace the entire fill valve? The valve in my toilet has a float cup. The water is leaking from the top of the valve.

It sounds like the valve is not fully closing which is causing the dripping. This could be due to an accumulation of limescale.
Try a proprietary limescale remover like Viakal and apply to the offending part.
