The buttons lever out as said above then for some cisterns there is a screw underneath that will release the mechanism and allow lift off of lid, easy enough. Some Twyfords of 30/40 years don't have a screw, the entire chrome button assembly is supposed to unscrew but mine was so stuck together I ended up cutting the outer surround with snip nosed pliers, its only plastic covered with chrome effect. That means a new mechanism is needed but that's probably best after so long anyway.

Yes ..it does screw off ..anticlockwise......if u are planning to insert a toilet disinfectant..then do the following..

rotate the screw anticlockwise..
lift the cistern gently with the screw in tact.
u'll have enough space to drop the toilet blocker in...
re screw it back...job done....:)

it does screw off, you will need rubber gloves for a firm grip, push flush down with your thumbs and unscrew, I have just done this but mine had crossed threaded and now need new inside

Normally, if you lift one of the two push-button sections up and then prize this out, you'll then be able to lift out the second part. After doing this, you'll then see a screw-driver slot in the circular push-button section. If you unscrew this, then the rest of the chrome-coloured push-button section will lift out and then the lid will be 'free' to remove and gain access to inside the cistern. HTH :o)
