finalizing dvds?

I made a big boo-boo... I recorded a bunch of things off of tv for my own personal use, and stupidly did not finalize the disks because I planned to do some editing out of the commercials... then I had to move... I still have the DVD recorders but can't seem to get them to work where I am now living... and can't watch them since I can't get the DVD recorders to work... I know they were kind of tricky to figure out when I first hooked them up after I first purchased them... one is a DVD Recorder/VHS Recorder combo unit, the other is just a DVD Recorder... both are stand-a-lone units to work with TVs, they are the same brand as well... I saw a post about this same problem on another site and a suggestion was made to drag & drop to a computer hard drive, then use a video editing software like Nero... sounds simple enough, but can I then copy the file to another DVD and finalize that so that I could play that on any (within reason) stand-a-lone?
