how do i get my 1998 laguna to stop saying CODE?

How do i get my 1998 renault laguna estate to stop displaying the word CODE i have the code but it wont let me enter it it would disconnecting the battery completely do it???

leave the car with the ignition on for at least half an hour or until the zero's appear then you can enter the code
