I tried this on a Matsui VP 9406 vcr and it worked a treat!

The message `THIS VIDEO BELONGS TO` is displayed
On the front of the video hold channel up button and press QTR for about five seconds, this should unlock the machine.

Just phoned Currys / Dixon support and they said the default code will either be 0000 or 1234 - if it has been changed you would need to speak to the previous owner.

Have you tried Currys (aka Dixons)? Matsui is one of their own brands.
