I have an AST laptop dated 1997 or so, and for some reason it has stopped detecting the display adapter or screen correctly; it finds Default Monitor and Standard VGA adapter, but these don't allow 600x800 display with true colour as before: so I want to know which adapter and monitor to load manually.

The problem is that Windows has 'lost' the machine specific drivers for your display adapter. As AST went defunct donkeys years ago, it is probably not possible to fix it because of a lack of a source for the drivers.
