How do you lower an retractable canopy that has been over-extended?

My four-post retractable canopy was opened and over-extended. Now the crank mechanism will not reverse to allow me to lower it. Is there anything I can do to get it to lower again?

might sound sill, but try and open more, you will need to allow the machanism to unlatch. other than that, strip down job.
