An ethernet adaptor is one of the most plug and play device you can install.

When I installed one in my computer, I did not see any "New hardware found" dialog, the adaptor was already detected, installed, and fully functional immediately after the first boot.

Extremely reliable, fast and secure.

Update Windows XP. Update the WiFi adapter drivers.

BTW, you can use Ethernet. You just install an Ethernet Adapter.

You do not say the OS
You do not mention how you connect to your router - cable or wireless - do you have a wireless card? A network port?
The router connects to the internet - you make a network connection to the router by wireless or cable.
Examine network connections from control panel
To modify the start up list type msconfig in the Run box and click OK
