Your antena is SUPOSED to have only one whire going to it.

So, only one whire is perfectly normal.

As the previous poster noted, your problem is surely caused by some other source.
If you are to far away from your hot spot, of there are wall in the way, you have poor signal.

Look at how many whi-fi networks can be located from your location.
You may not have a free channel and are getting to much interferences from the other networks.

Any BIG motors or lot of various whirings in your area? Those can produce lots of interferences as well as obstructing the path to your hot spot.

Your problem is almost certainly not that the laptop has been incorrectly asembled. It is far more likely that you are getting RF Interfernce (usually from neighbours' WiFi) or that the environment is not good for WiFi; that is to say, other sources of RFI and/or walls.

Take a search on the Web on how to use a utuilty called inSSIDer.
