vauxhall astra van 2001 ?

Just driving home from work and the van pretty much cut out, so i restarted the van all the way back the steering was very heavy and the dials on the dash were going mad and it tried to stall a few times at the lights through town. any ideas ??

If the battery is low or the alternator is not sending out at least 13.0 volts you get electrical problems as the steering is electrical powered
