ferroli combi boiler bar pressure?

the bar pressure in my ferroli combi boiler keeps creeping up to between 3-4,when it should be between 1-1/2,and water is coming out the outside overflow pipe although only a dribble, i have tried taking water from a radiator,(a cup full) but the pressure still goes up,a plumber told me to leave the water pressure at 0 and use a bike pump to put the pressure to 1-1/2
is this right

i have the problem of the pressure rising slowly to 3 bar and blowing out of the overflow i have replaced the expanshion vessel checked the filling loop for passing water whitch is ok also removed the pipe from the expansion vessel and checked for blockage all ok still the pressure rises to 3bar could you help

This thread is the answer! (2004) solution. A few more pointers to add.
You may need a step ladder as you have to be looking from the top
You are loking for something that maybe Red in colour.(701)
My valve was at the very back and almost hidden by the flew shroud.
Make sure the pump to use has a flexible hose as my valve
was difficult to latch onto.

I had exactly the same problem. I followed the advice on this thread and used my car tyre pump to pressurise the expansion vessel. Valve was at the bottom on the front of the EV so was dead easy to connect. I then refilled the water circuit and the boiler now works fine, only 1/4 bar rise at full temp. Didn't heed warning about the excess water though which leaked out of my unplugged towel-rail rad (highest point) onto bathroom carpet, d'oh.

The pump thing worked for me, I flushed boiler out left it with zero water pressure then just pumped some air in the valve already mentioned.
I never had a gauge just put 10 or so pumps in and tried it.
worked the last 3 time I tried it,its not worked for over a year when heating is on,so massive plus.
The valve is hard to find its right at the back at the top right hand side,the expansion tank on mine is red.
My boiler is about 13 years old only had a fan fitted and small problem with pilot light.
Not sure if new ones are as good,I see wicks do them cheapish,but extras add up (flu's and stuff).

i have a Ferroli boiler with 5 years parts and labour warranty and i wouldn't ever buy a boiler from Ferroli again and would suggest others to do the same.

I have a family with 2 small children and was told that they wouldn't be able to get the hot water of heating working until an engineer made a visit in 5 days.

your expansion vessal has had it. either that or your filling loop is passing. but chances are as its a ferroli it will be the expansion vessal.

The expansion vessel on the ferroli optima 701 is at the rear of the boiler, you can get to the valve from the top of the boiler. valve is usually to the right looking at the boiler from front above the boiler, firstly drain water from the radiator system so pressure gauge reads zero, then use a footpump or bike pump to pressurize the vessel to 1 bar (14psi). Refil the radiators via your filling loop. problem fixed.

Hi, same problem. Found the valve to the bottom right of the pressure vessel by reaching underneath. Hope this helps. Just off to pressurise mine.

I had the same problem with a Ferroli 901.
I've just re-pressurised the expansion vessel, with a bike pump, as suggested by Karl Dec 2004.
Guess what;...... it worked!
I was looking at a large bill from a plumber who said I needed a new expansion vessel.
Now I can phone him and tell him I fixed it with my bike pump. Sweet!

I had the same problems with the BAR pressure. I turned the whole system off at the mains. Set the pressure. Bled the radiators top to bottom. Turned all the radiators to OFF. Then restarted the system at the mains, turning the Radiators back on one at a time. Re-pressurizing as I went. The system then stabalized and I have had no problems in 6 months. Hope this helps.

not sure if am in the rite place here... hv a question for the plumbers... i also have a nuisance ferroli... pressure reading at 3 bit despite bleeding loads of water from radiator it refills itself... overflow constantly dripping water... where abouts can i attach a bike pump to? (no rude replies plz!) is there any danger in doing this? hv kids to think about... if i cant fix this myself plz can u advise me of what would be a reasonable price to fix this problem... yr response would be much appreciated!

I have this problem with a Vokera Linea boiler where the boiler blows off at 3bar. British Gas have changed the two valves on the loop to no effect. Does the Linea have the same system and expansion vessel?

your pressure vessel may be damaged and the expansion rises causing this over flow.some systems need a larger vessel but rarely gets fitted.your plumber is silly man lol

I had the same problem on a Ferroli Optima 701. The pressure kept dropping to below the cutoff point, but when I re-pressurised (by topping up the water) to only about 1.2 Bar, it went up to 3 Bar when the boiler was operating, so that the relief valve vented. Consequently, when the boiler switched off and went cold, the pressure dropped below the cutoff point again and wouldn't restart until re-pressurised (very annoying on cold mornings!). I even had a boiler repair company in, who replaced the pressure relief valve, which of course made no difference. After I pumped up the expansion unit with air, the problem was solved. A simple fix that cost nothing! Pity the operating instructions don't warn you about this problem.

We had the same problem on an Ferroli Arena 30C. There is an expansion vessel built into the boiler that is pre-pressurised with air to approx 1.5 bar. When the water system heats up the system pressure rises proportionally, and without compensating pressure in the expansion vessel the water pressure just keeps rising until it blows off at 3 bar.

To fix the problem you need to do the following:

1. Switch off the boiler. Ensure that there is no water pressure in the system.
2. On top of the expansion vessel (grey object with standard tyre valve on top, viewable from the top of the boiler) inflate with a bike or car pump to 1.5 bar (22 psi)
3. Charge your water system pressure to 1.0 to 1.5 bar.
4. Start your boiler

This should sort out your problem !
