Creative ZENx-Fi style MP3 player.
It won't switch on, or charge. When connectd to pc it shows the battery very low with a red cross through it. Pressing the reset button does not work.

Have I overcharged it, or spoiled it by charging in the mains with a normal USB/three pin socket? Will a new battery solve the problem? If so, how do I change it?

try charging it again from the pc , with the usb cabel , your 3 pin plug charger might not be working , and not chargeing it ,
