when i push the power on all the lights come on the panel but none of the push buttons for choosing the cycles work. then the lights all go off and the cycle length lights at the top start running from front to back . while this is happening all of the other panel lights are off.

There is a special demonstration mode the panel can be put in to by the sales people to draw attention when it is on display in the shop. Sounds like your machine is going in to demo mode when you press the power on button. Unless you know someone who can check, find & replace the faulty switch or remove the corrosion which may be another cause of the fault then the only other way is to buy & fit a new display board. Not the main controller board, just the one inside the panel for the switches & lights.
