agitator is slipping yet the agitator is ok. seems to be that the spline is not engaging to something in the gear box. Is is worth dismantling ?

Have you checked the drive belt? Might be loose or have oil on it making it slip. The agitator itself has teeth which grip the metal gearbox shaft. These plastic teeth sometimes break away especially if the agitator has been loose for a while. Very rare for the internals of the gearbox to slip or not work properly.
