After reading mail from other people, I came across the incident of the "burnt out" printed circuit board. I checked the board located near the bottom of the machine and found indeed a full track 25mm long burnt away. I soldered a piece of wire across this track and resoldered the bare pin along that track. This fixed up the problem and the machine works fine (several weeks now). The Ariston warehouse in Melbourne were very helpfull and sold me a new board for $285 (delivered). Note that one can buy a very similar "LG" machine for about $380 on special right now! Its daylight robbery by the European manufacturer, isnt it?
