The boiler is a vaillant ecotec pro 28 R2. This has recently been installed and whilst there isn't a problem as such i can hear either the fan or pump kicking in several times during the night. The heating is switched off and there is no hot water consumption at this time. What is it i'm hearing and more importantly why.

The green light was constantly on. I have done as you suggested and its now out. Hopefully its peacefull nights from now on.

Look at the display, on a pro, is the green light permanantly on? This would be the cause, the hot water is on pre-heat (if you have the bigger display there would be a 'C' displayed in the window).

To turn it off, turn the top dial (hot water) all the way down (anti clockwise), the green light will go out or the C will flash and disapppear.
Now turn the hot water dial back to the temperature, you require.
