On my Epson Stylus Photo 830 I took out the pads, washed them out thoroughly, let them completely dry (took 48 hours), then put them back in and reassembled printer.
A fiddly and very messy job - best done outside or in a utility room as you don't want ink where it will stain flooring, furniture etc.
Use the SSC Service Utility program (downloadable from the internet) to reset your printer counter.
