2002 Transit 100t280 diesel charging problem?

Last night the alternator warning light came on for a few minutes, then went out again. Today the battery is flat and the alternator light won't come on at all. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks.

Edward O'Hare, do not waste your time on the black wire, it goes nowhere!

Thanks very much for your advice cdc. In this case, it's looking like it's the most impossible to get to broken wire in the history of broken wires. About 8 inches above the alternator, the three wires from the alternator plug, join the main loom. The black wire to the alternator has broken somewhere up there. It's the type of job that you need to develop another two elbows on each arm to achieve. I've no idea how I'm going to get at it to rejoin the wire. Does anyone know where the black wire goes to, so that I can bypass the hard to get at bit?
Cheers in advance.

If the loom is ok down to the alternator then it sounds like your alternator is at fault,if you put a good battery onto it and get it started then check the charging rate, should be around 14v+,anything less then change the alternator.Maybe one thing to remember is these use a stretch belt and there is a tool for rewinding them onto the crank pulley without damaging them.If you are jump starting these then before you remove the jump leads turn on all lights, heater fan for a minute when it starts and this avoids dangerous voltage spikes which can burn out ecu`s,seen it done, cost hundreds £.
