Suddenly some programmes do not expad to fill the screen. I remember my old tely suffered but this panasonic has never suffered this way

E.g.
What model is the TV?
Is the picture you are describing being displayed from the TV's own tuner or an external source?
If it is an external source how is that connected?
What is the aspect ratio you have set the TV to?
What is the aspect ratio of the external source?
Is it for all programmes?
What does your TV manual recommend?
