Make sure the carriage is seated properly on the needle bed. It is probably best to take it off the machine and remove the sinker plate.
Reseat the carriage and check that it slides freely with all needles out of work, then pull some needles forward and check again. If it will not move over the needles, it suggests something is jammed under the carriage. You will need to remove it again and check that the needle channels on the underside are clear. Give them a clean and apply some fresh oil and try again.
If it moves freely over the needles without the sinker plate fitted, refit the sinker plate, making sure it sits level and try again. If it still jams, check your sponge/needle retaining bar.
