SD has it correct - in the UK the Distance Selling Regulations 2000 cover this - enforced by The Director-General of Fair Trade and the Office of fair Trading (OFT)

If new from business seller, contact them should still be under warranty. Do not mess with it your self, as that would invalidate the warranty, just because via ebay, does not mean you do not have consumer rights
