air hand brake on a mercedes 814?

I have a 2000 Mercedes 814 with the following problem. The air handbrake is very slow to engage, it takes up to 10 seconds. When I release the hand brake it is fine. Has anybody come across this problem before. Any assistance would be very much appreciated.
