How to repair mechanical thermostat/programmer for Alpha combi boiler?

My toddler has over wound the clock part on the thermostat and now it doesn't work at all. It won't wind and the clock numbers don't match up with the numbers on the dial.
I've just taken it apart to see if I can fix it and as I did, all the bits fell out. Six white plastic cogs and a strange looking red piece.
Does anyone have a solution?
I could buy a new one, I think they are about £40, but make do and mend has always been my strategy.
Thanks
