dvd on computer playing but with no sound?

the dvd player on my computer plays fine but there is no sound
it plays cd's no problem. Have checked sound card etc.

Silly question - but does your sound work otherwise?
If so, it could be that you are missing the internal audio cable attaching your DVD drive to your sound card..

The other possibility is that you haven't got the volume turned up on the DVD player - or possibly on mute.. Especially on PowerDVD it can happen easily..
