what is the make and model ? 38 seconds is an odd value but suggests that this is a timing detected fault based on the processor strobing times. I.E. the failing parmeter is "looked" at either every 38 seconds, or 38 seconds after a set operation. This sounds to me like an inverter driven microwave but the slightly longer time the usual gives me some cause for doubt. it is unlikely to be an overheat problem at such a short time. www.microwavesworld.co.uk for an email response
