The handle lifts straight up when trying to lock door, it does not engage locking system.
When I took off handles there is another handle hole that works, can these be reversed, can original handle hole bits be fixed ? How do I get out locking system as lock barrel stops it coming out ?

The barrel screw is on edge of door remove it, you will need to turn key to 1 o'clock to slide it out. Sounds like you have off set handles one hole for inside one for out.
