I had to call a plumber, though it turns out I could have fixed it myself. This is what I learnt: remove the outlet hose from where it attaches to the rest of the plumbing system - under the sink in my case. It was blocked, but the material fell out quite easily and the pump began to work, and water then came out and that was it! He advised making sure that the outlet hose was high in relation to the rest of the plumbing so that water, food etc from the kitchen sink did not back up along the hose - he hooked it over some of the pipework under the sink. I also noticed that, at the bottom of the dishwasher the part of the food filter whihc has a loop had been fitted on off-centre so that particles of food could have slipped through. I don't know if it would generally be easy to unblock the outlet hose from the far end, so to speak.
