ceiling light and fan?

i replaced my bathroom light when i disconnected old one i had 2cables(red ,black,and green) in each ifitted both black to neutral it would not workthe fitting had both red together to live terminal,i connected both black to neutral ,light would not work i disconnected one black and the light lit,i also have extractor fan on same pull down cord,but fan was not working where am i going wrong

Both red together is Good - Live coming in and Live going off to the switch - but when you switch the switch on - live comes back from the switch on a Black wire ! They call it switched live - it should have a coloured sleeve on it to show that it's not a neutral.

The light will work with Switched Live (black) on one side and Neutral (black) on the other side.

I can not comment on the fan.
