to toptrish,
like i said the unvented cylinder is upstairs in the airing cupboard and the expansion vessel is downstairs in the garage. i turned off the cold feed to the cylinder and opened the hot tap in the bathroom and half a cup full came out. does this mean it needs regenerated and if so how is it done? im not sure where to find this filter to check. is it on the cold feed going into the cylinder and does it also connect to the cylinder discharge?
what does the pipework going into the cylinder point marked "secondary" do and what is the purpose of the pump on that pipework and would that be anything to o with it?
many thanks,
Mary

There are 2 things to do;1 if there is no expansion vessel for your cylinder the air bubble will need to be regenerated, but yours may have it built into the top of cylinder,to find out if it needs doing turn off cold feed to cylinder and open a hot tap,if only a cup full of water comes out it will need doing;2 the brass valve on the cold mains should have a black plastic part, this houses the gauze filter, turn off water first before removing it

its an unvented cylinder. OSO is the make 330 litres and is in the airing cupboard upstairs. there is a pump on the pipework and another valve which goes to the cold and the discharge. In the garage there is a gloworm boiler, a pump on the pipe coming out of it and the expansion vessel next to that.
i hope that is some help

Im sorry I mis-read your question,I thought your hot water cylinder was unvented, before I explain anything has your tank got a header tank in the loft or is it in fact an unvented [high pressure ] tank and what make and model is it?

to Toptrish,
there is an expansion vessel next to the boiler in the garage while the cylinder is upstairs in the airing cupboard. Is the control valve the one which goes to the cold and the discharge?
Thanks for your help

Has the tank got an external expansion vessel? if not have you regenerated the air gap? also the filter may be blocked,it is in the control valve by the cylinder
