It maybe that your old dimmer was a wire wound type,the new type are electronic.Modern lamps have a habit of shorting out at the point of failing therefore putting a lot of load on the dimmer.As the previous answer said fitting a 2 or 3 amp fuse inline might help,or fitting dimmable led lamps would cure it as they last for years
