Onkyo DX-C120 CD Player occasionally skips parts on any CD?

This problem was probably brought on after I bumped into the CD tray when the the player was in the open position. The CD player randomly skips parts on CDs. The CD does not back track or skip forward, it just leaves out part of the sound about 1/2 a second to about 3 seconds long and sometimes is accompanied by a crackle or scratch sound at the start of the skip. This seems to happen more frequently when the weather it is hot and humid. I have yet to fix a CD player and would really like some feedback from someone who has experienced this problem and knows how to fix it.

I've had the same problem for about a year now. It has gotten worse, to where now it is unacceptable for playing CD's
I tried gentle compressed air to clear dust (a suggestion from a technical friend) but no change.
Looks like a new CD player is in my future, and more junk in the landfill.

I have been working on one that is similar, but worse in that it wouldnt play at all till I fiddled with it. I found that a nylon or plastic gear was broken that is part of the shifting mechanism for the pickup. A worm gear would drive the broken gear til it hit the crack and then bind up. A little help with a probe got it through the rough patch, but it is not usable in this condition. This caused a skipping problem, either from song to song, or to repeat sections of the same song. I havent found a replacement gear yet.
