Stannah 400 stops working after a few inches?

My Stannah 400 has stopped working fully it starts to go up but then after a few inches it stops. If I turn off switch at the rear then back on the chair goes down fine.
When the chair starts to go up everything sounds fine then there is a dull clunk & it stops just as though a safety switch has operated there is no bleeping sounds etc. I have looked around see no obstacles & made sure the seat is in correct position but cannot see any problem.
At present I have not removed any covers except to reveal the Batteries.
Has anyone any ideas?
all the best

Hi
thanks for that I have eventually replaced the batteries all working fine now.
I did not really think that was the answer has last time they went it would go up a bit stop then go again this time it would not go up till I had reversed it. just shows sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one
thanks once again

Hi there,,,,,its going to be the main carriage batteries,,[though first check to see that the spur mains supply to the white charger has not been turned off by mistake]if there is no fault found there then your looking at replacing the 2 x 12 volt 7.2 amp batteries, these only last between 3 to 5 years depending on wear and tear of stair lift.you can test the ones in your stair lift with a meter and if the combined volts fall below 22 volts then you will need new batteries,,also the first signs of batteries faulting are the stair lift stopping going up but will come down ok......hope this helps.........paul...portsmouth
