when driving down the road everything is ok then loads of white smoke and engine starts reving on its own even when you switch off

Make? Model? Year? It running on would check your oil level,white smoke suggests a coolant problem,have seen on some motors a defective egr valve coolant chamber internal fault causing terrible white smoke but your problem is difficult to determine,also check turbo impeller for wear and play.
