renault trafic "select neutral" message with beeping?

Hi

Had my Trafic Auto Sport a day. It just started beeping at me and displayed a message "select neutral". The beeping stops when i brake and the van still drives fine.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thank you!

Thank you Paul, your answer sorted the problem on my Vivaro.
In my case I put a little sticky pad on the door where the switch hits. Very kind of you to share. At first I thought gearbox issue !!!! Also thanks to Sophie, will look out for that one.

I recently had this problem. I found that the problem was due to one of the doors (in this case the driver door) not correctly detecting that it was closed. If you look at the place where the door closes you will see that there is a black plastic rod which gets pressed when the door is closed and acts as a switch telling the van that the door is closed. What had happened in my case was that something got caught in the switch and bent the metal surrouding it meaning the switch was not full depressed when the door was closed.
This was fixed by un-bending the metal allowing the switch to properly work and this fixed the problem.

To anyone who has this issue - you need to make sure you are in gear/drive/reverse BEFORE you take off the handbrake. My bf and I have just spent an hour driving with that annoying beeping before we figured that out!
