My thermistor should read 5K Ohms.

It is reading 13.4 KOhms. Is it faulty ?.

Put it in the freezer and measure it
Warm it up with a hair dryer and measure it

The resistance of a thermistor will vary with temperature.

I would guess that your thermistor is not faulty
