Why is my opel corsa stuck in 3rd gear?

I striped the gearbox and found a plastic cap that goes on the 3rd gear fork selector was missing.could it be my problem.

iv'e not heard of this cap before. have sorted two corsa's with same problem one stuck in 3rd and one in rev both due to loose and worn gear linkage. way out of adjustment. [not many will tackle a gearbox usually a trip to the scrapyard].
